How to make your marketing strategy work for you
I’ve had a few clients say that working with me feels a little like talking to a therapist.
And while I’m not a therapist, I understand. I’ve learned how to listen, ask the right questions and create a safe space for people to say things they haven’t said out loud before, especially about their business.
But it wasn’t always this way.
When I first started working with clients, I was kind of a mess. I thought my job was to have all the answers. I’d show up underprepared, assume I knew what they needed, and steamroll right over what they were really trying to say.
It wasn’t helping anyone.
So I joined SCORE (a nonprofit where experienced business leaders mentor entrepreneurs) and became a certified mentor. That’s where I learned:
People don’t just want advice.
They want to be heard and understood.
They don’t just want answers.
They want answers that actually work for them.
That’s the difference between surface-level strategy and the kind of work I do.
Take one of my clients, for example. She told me she didn’t know what to post, even though she had tons of ideas. Now, a surface-level strategist might say:
“Post more often.”
“Share an inspirational story on Monday.”
“Use these 3 hooks for better engagement.”
But I went deeper. I asked: Why wasn’t she posting?
That’s when the real reasons came out.
She was afraid her aunt would see her content and comment in a weird, judgy way.
She didn’t think she was a good writer.
She worried about being misunderstood.
That completely changed the strategy. Instead of forcing her into a schedule or making her do things that didn’t feel safe, we made a plan that felt like her.
She blocked her aunt. 😉
She started posting short videos.
She showed up consistently, because she actually wanted to.
Strategy that doesn’t feel like you, just doesn’t work
If you’re a founder or CEO, you’ve probably tried a lot already. You’ve hired agencies. You’ve read all the thought leadership. And maybe you’ve watched what other people are doing and thought, “I could do that.”
But if you’re not showing up, it’s probably not because you don’t know what to say.
It’s because something inside of you is keeping you from saying it. But:
You don’t need another content calendar.
You need clarity on why you’re holding back.
You need strategy that works because it’s yours.
That’s what I do. I ask questions. Listen without judgment. And help you find the version of visibility that actually feels good to you.
Because let’s be honest: If your strategy doesn’t take you into account, you’ll never post in the first place.
If you’re curious about what might really be holding you back from showing up online, I’m sharing more in my upcoming 3-part series: The Real Reason You’re Not Showing Up Online. In it, I’ll walk you through the three biggest blocks I see, even among smart, seasoned business owners. Stay tuned.
